Introduction

Welcome to Square Go – the fight for Paisley’s best roll and sausage. As part of my digital marketing communications module, I have been tasked with writing a blog about something that not only I am passionate about, but something I believe the Scottish population are equally passionate about. Instinctively, one of the first ideas that came to mind was one of Scotland’s finest food offerings – the square sausage. The square sausage, otherwise referred to as the Lorne sausage, or if you’re fond of sheep, a “slice”, is nothing short of iconic. Great mystery surrounds the square sausage in terms of when it was invented, who created such a beautiful delicacy and what nutritional benefit (if any?) it provides. Nevertheless it remains a staple part of any good Scottish breakfast, and undoubtedly saves many Scots from the brink of death most Sundays. Nothing screams “you’re a loser”, quite like a greasy roll and sausage, circa 2pm, still lying in your bed. However, when that crispy roll...

Caffé Pronto

The third contender in the running for the prestigious title of Paisley’s best roll and sausage is Caffé Pronto. Caffé Pronto has been the go-to on many occasions throughout summer before attending the building site, predominantly for two reasons. Firstly, the café lives up to its name with the rolls being served “pronto”. Secondly, the roll, and more so the sausage offered at Caffé Pronto is colossal, with the sausage surpassing the edges of the roll. As a result of this, the quick service time received at Caffé Pronto is essentially cancelled out by how long it’ll take you to consume this behemoth.

Despite its size, you only pay a reasonable £2 for the roll. When you factor in the fact that you won’t have to eat for another 3-5 business days, I’d say that’s good value for money. Also, for the first time in this series I was given the option between a soft or crispy roll. Obviously I chose a crispy roll because I don’t have a criminal record, but I still appreciated the optionality. In terms of packaging, the roll is wrapped in tin foil, with a napkin encased inside. Although it doesn’t look the best, the tin foil plays an important roll of keeping the food warm. This is especially beneficial for those dreaded hangovers where it takes you what feels like hours to muster up the strength for that first bite. Also, as mentioned previously, the service time was rapid, with the roll being served about 2 minutes after placing the order. A 2-minute wait time originally frightened thee, with the thought of being hit with a heat light job circulating in my head as I walked back to the car. However, this did not seem to be the case.

Caffé Pronto evidently do not sacrifice size for taste, as the sausage is still of great quality. The sausage was not too dense, yet not too light and insubstantial. It was slightly on the saltier side, which could be the final nail in the coffin if your hydration levels are already depleted from a heavy night of bevying. Nevertheless, it was a great roll and sausage – I will be back.
