Introduction

Welcome to Square Go – the fight for Paisley’s best roll and sausage. As part of my digital marketing communications module, I have been tasked with writing a blog about something that not only I am passionate about, but something I believe the Scottish population are equally passionate about. Instinctively, one of the first ideas that came to mind was one of Scotland’s finest food offerings – the square sausage. The square sausage, otherwise referred to as the Lorne sausage, or if you’re fond of sheep, a “slice”, is nothing short of iconic. Great mystery surrounds the square sausage in terms of when it was invented, who created such a beautiful delicacy and what nutritional benefit (if any?) it provides. Nevertheless it remains a staple part of any good Scottish breakfast, and undoubtedly saves many Scots from the brink of death most Sundays. Nothing screams “you’re a loser”, quite like a greasy roll and sausage, circa 2pm, still lying in your bed. However, when that crispy roll...

McHarg's

The fourth and unfortunately final roll shop battling to be crowned Paisley’s best roll and sausage provider is McHarg’s. McHarg’s holds a special place in my heart, with fond memories of being served breakfast after church on Sundays throughout my childhood. Nowadays, I’ve become somewhat of a plastic Catholic, only attending “the big games” such as Easter and Christmas, so McHarg’s is more commonly used as my go to hangover scran after an unholy showing the previous night. I’ve become so acquainted with the heavenly taste of a McHarg’s roll and sausage that there wasn’t much need for me to visit again for this review, however I’ll take any excuse I can get.

By no means do McHarg’s excel on trendy shop décor or fancy dishes, nor do they need to. McHarg’s have the basics down to a tee and clearly understand the fundamentals of a typical Scottish breakfast. A roll and sausage at McHarg’s will set you back an extremely reasonable £1.60, considering the quality of the roll. The roll itself is freshly baked, and yes although I slandered soft roll consumers in my previous post, this is different. An area where other shops exceed McHarg’s is the packaging. With the rolls being packaged in polystyrene boxes, steam seems to build up and can leave some unwanted moisture at the bottom of your roll. In the grand scheme of things, this small downfall does not affect its ranking as my favourite roll in Paisley. Regarding service time, I waited the standard 5 minutes for my roll to be served. I feel like this word “standard” epitomizes the McHarg’s roll and sausage. It's safe, it's familiar, it's classic.

Unfortunately, this review marks the end of my time as a roll and sausage influencer. I hugely appreciate all the comments, shares and encouragement from Square Go’s loyal readers. With numerous roll shop suggestions flying in I hate to be leaving you on a cliff-hanger. Saying this, if any roll shop owners are reading this and want me to pose at Park Circus and give a review for a free roll, I’ll be there with bells on.
